Tips for a Successful Long-distance Road Trip

Weekend getaways are great – especially when the warm weather lasts into Fall, and Manitobans become antsy about getting back outdoors. However, nothing beats a long-distance road trip that allows you to explore our beautiful country and take in many new sights and experiences.

To make the most of your next long-haul RV adventure, consider the tips below before setting out.

Make a Road Trip Playlist

Much of your road trip will be consumed by driving, which doesn’t always provide an invigorating view. Making a playlist of upbeat music, podcasts, and/or audiobooks can help ease the monotony of driving for extended periods of time.

Bring Along Leisure Activities

Whether you’re on the road with just your partner or the entire family, it’s a great idea to bring along games, cards, books, and toys to keep everybody occupied while in-between destinations. Consider picking up some crossword puzzles, Sudokus, and other paperback material before heading out.

Pack Snacks for the Road

Depending on where your travels will take you, packing items such as hiking shoes, bathing suits, and cozy clothes are essential and generally aren’t forgotten about while organizing your suitcase. But something else to consider packing is some travel snacks – both healthy and indulgent – to enjoy as you set off on your journey. This will help minimize stops in the first leg of your trip and satiate cravings.

Plan, Plan, and Plan Some More

Setting out for travel in any capacity requires some level of planning. With an RV adventure, planning might seem best kept at a minimum – after all, spontaneity comes with owning a trailer, right? Not necessarily.

Especially when setting out on a longer trip (and potentially uncharted territory), planning is key. You should get a sense of where pit stops are to ensure that you’re never running on fumes (both your vehicle and you!), have an idea of where rest stops are so you can refuel, stretch your legs, and take a break from driving, and plan for rush hour if you’re driving through any cities.

Plus, even with a destination in mind, it’s nice to make stops along the way at historic sites, national parks, and at other areas for sight-seeing opportunities. While planning every single detail may be overkill, having some key points mapped out can greatly benefit your long-distance trip.
